Makeover Monday | Mid-Century Mirror

Mirror Mirror on the wall….

Do you ever feel like you have too many projects (or one giant project) to tackle and you have no idea where to start?? Well, I literately have a trailer full of them!

Even though I spent half a day pulling everything out of my cargo trailer a couple months ago, throwing away or donating much of it, I’m a junker at heart and there were just too many things I wasn’t ready to let go of yet….you know those pieces that make you think “hmmm….I could do SOMETHING with that!” ???

Well, over the weekend I decided I’m going to pull one piece out of there each week, give it a makeover, clean it up, whatever and find it a new home….enter this beautiful 1950’s mirror with the cracked seashell.

I wasn’t a fan of the shell anyway and with a little prying and a couple splinters it popped right off.

And this is the mess I was left with. Not very pretty but I could see a little potential now! Funny how one detail on a piece can totally throw off the design for you. I will say the seashell motif is classic. It’s found on MANY beautiful antiques and vintage pieces, but it’s just not my vibe…..and I love sea shells…..Go figure!

Next I scraped off the loose veneer, filled in with wood putty and added these beautiful scroll moldings from WoodUBend to create this pretty frame like design.

Here’s the same area after painting….I really dropped the ball and didn’t get any more process photos!

After the wood putty and glue for the moldings dried, I cleaned the whole piece, scuff sanded to give it a little “grip” and cleaned again to remove any dust.

I painted a base coat of Spanish Moss by Dixie Belle by stippling it on with a chip brush to create a textured finish.

Next a dry brushed a little coat of Kudzu by Dixie Belle and added Plaster by Waverly to the moldings.

I used Annie Sloan dark wax in some of the crevices and then Annie Sloan clear wax over everything.

The last step was highlighting with Gold Gilding Wax by Dixie Belle.

The final result is an aged green that’s somehow both muted and vibrant. Timeless classic and a little fairytale cottagey!

This piece was snapped up the same day I shared it on social and I can’t wait to see it displayed in it’s beautiful new home!

I hope this post inspired you to tackle at least one project on your to-do list! There’s nothing quite as satisfying as marking something off a list….am I right?!
